This Walton-on-Thames project involved a complete internal strip-out and roof removal of a period cottage that had been left unoccupied for many years.
The property had deteriorated significantly over time, with extensive pigeon infestation throughout the loft and upper floors, widespread contamination from bird droppings, rotten timber floors caused by long-term animal urine and internal walls that all required removal before the renovation could begin.
Our role was to safely strip the property back to its structural shell, remove all contaminated materials, dismantle the existing roof ready for replacement and leave the building clean, safe and ready for the refurbishment works to begin.
Whether you're removing an old garage before an extension, creating more usable garden space or preparing for redevelopment, we'd be happy to help.

Every renovation project is different, but older properties often reveal hidden problems that only become apparent once work begins.
This cottage had been neglected for many years and had become home to a large pigeon infestation. As a result, significant quantities of bird droppings had accumulated throughout the roof space and upper floors, requiring careful handling and controlled removal before demolition could continue.
The prolonged exposure to animal urine had also caused extensive damage to the original timber floors. Many areas had become structurally unsound and required complete removal to allow the renovation to proceed safely.
Alongside the internal strip-out, all non-structural internal walls were removed to prepare the property for its new layout, while the existing roof covering was carefully dismantled ready for a complete replacement.
Although the property presented more challenges than a typical residential strip-out, our objective remained the same: remove everything that was no longer fit for purpose, manage the waste responsibly and hand the building back ready for the next phase of construction.
Because of the condition of the property, careful planning was essential.
Areas affected by pigeon contamination were handled methodically before the wider strip-out continued, helping minimise the spread of dust and debris throughout the building. Damaged timber floors were removed safely, all internal walls scheduled for demolition were stripped out, and the roof covering was dismantled to allow the roofing contractor to begin immediately afterwards.
Throughout the project, demolition waste was removed as work progressed, keeping the site organised and allowing the client to clearly see the transformation from an abandoned property into a building ready for renovation.
What started as a neglected cottage that had stood untouched for years became a clean structural shell ready for its next chapter.
The roof had been removed ready for replacement, contaminated materials had been safely cleared, rotten flooring had been stripped out and the internal layout opened up ready for the refurbishment works.
By completing all of the enabling works in one programme, the client was able to move straight into the rebuilding phase without the delays that often occur when multiple contractors are involved.

Buying a period property is exciting, but older buildings often hide years of neglect behind the walls, under the floors and above the ceilings. Whether you're dealing with water damage, rotten timber, unwanted internal walls, ageing roofs or properties that have simply been left untouched for years, the first step towards a successful renovation is stripping everything back safely and properly.
At The Demo Squad, we help homeowners, builders and developers prepare properties for refurbishment by carrying out controlled strip-outs, internal demolition, roof removal and site clearance before the rebuilding begins.
